Dear Semi-Abandoned Readers,
On August 28, 2013 I fell while taking out the compost, injuring my right wrist. It has taken me seven weeks to get a proper diagnosis and a cast: two hairline fractures, a sprain (stretched ligaments) and tendinitis. I can only type with my left hand, which needs to perform all other hand functions (dressing, bathing, eating, holding the phone, etc.). This is why you have not heard from me lately.
My “cooking” consists of pouring bowls of cold cereal and milk and spreading peanut butter on toast. I mooch cooked food off friends who cook, eat whatever my mother prepares for the family dinner, microwave attractive leftovers and carry on as best I can.
The blog will return when I have recovered full use of my dominant hand. Meanwhile, there is plenty to read in the blogosphere, judging from my inbox.
Be well.
Sharyn
Hi Sharyn, bummer, bummer, bummer.
Knowing you, you will be creative and use this time well. I hope you have a stack of books you’ve been dying to read.
Most if all, I hope you can keep your spirits up and that your body will heal well and quickly.
Love,
Robin

Thanks, Robin. I did do a lot of reading, including all of Cheryl Strayed’s books (wonderful). Johnny and I go to medical appointments on Mondays and I am doing some odd jobs for a friend a couple of days a week. Now that my wrist is in a cast, there’s nothing for it but rest and time…
Sorry, Sharyn, to read that you’ve had such a bad fall. Do take care. I hope your recovery is quick and complete.
Thank you, John. I have a good doctor and I have had some family financial support. Quick and complete would be great! We’re starting with a couple of weeks in a cast.
Sharyn, so sorry to hear about your wrist. My best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Take care,
daisy
Thank you, Daisy. Hope things are going well for you.
Aw, boy! I wish you a speedy recovery. And good food…
I wish you a speedy recovery Sharyn.
Thank you, Eva.
I’m so sorry to hear this news, Sharyn. I occasionally see your “face” on a blog or two and have thought you were just taking a little break. I had no idea that was a literal break! I am glad you let us know. I am sure this must be very frustrating, and we’ll hope for the quickest possible recovery! ox
Thank you, Debra — I only found out that it was broken this Wednesday: the fractures were too slight to show on the x-rays — it took an MRI to reveal the exact nature of the injuries.
Oh gosh Sharyn that sounds bad. But at least you have a proper diagnosis now and can get the right treatment. I’m presuming your busking is very much on hold too . Take care
Yes — it is hard to play without a right hand. Glad to have gotten the diagnosis.
Get well soon Sharyn! I hope you’re not in pain and you’re healing well. Take care x
Not much pain as long as I don’t do anything with my right hand, Lauren.
Sharyn, I’m so sorry to hear of your injuries. If you wish, email me your mailing address at skimwilk@yahoo.com and I’ll post you a get-well package from Seattle. X
Ooh — a package. How can I resist that? Thank you, Susan, for your thoughtfulness.
I hope you are almost totally recovered by now… looking forward to good news coming from you!
Far from it, Sally. I got the cast off yesterday and went back to a splint. The hand and wrist are weak and clumsy still, but at least I’m on the mend.
Be well also… much better by now I hope. I am guilty of not spending much time with my personal blog, or reading others’… and I believe I owe you a book. No excuses. Just sidetracked. Looking forward to an update, whenever you feel so inclined.
Cast off two days ago, MacMurray — I’m just beginning to type with two hands while wearing a splint. My right hand fatigues easily, so I am still resting and reading quite a bit.
OH NO!!!!!!!!! How are you feeling now???
Hi Tiffany. Yesterday I was able to make the bed for the first time in three months. My hand, wrist and fingers are still stiff and sore — I have to work to be able to bend them in the morning and I have to be careful with putting any pressure on the right hand, but I am getting better.
Hope your hand heals quickly sharyn
Thanks, Lauren — it’s all better now.
